Although the extension of electricity to rural areas was supposed to improve the lives of the people by providing energy for cottage industries and small scale productive ventures, this has not been the case in many parts of Ghana and in many cases have resulted in debts for the people because electricity is being used only for lighting and entertainment. The Energy Foundation has designed a programme under which rural enterprises would be established to create employment and reduce poverty in electrified rural communities.
