  1. The electric cooker is the highest electrical energy consumer in the home with a power rating of about 8,500 watts. Unless it is inevitable, avoid using the electric cooker. The gas cooker is a cheaper alternative.
  2. If you must use the electric cooker;
  3. Use cooking utensils slightly bigger in diameter than the hot plate to prevent heat from escaping.
  4. Use flat bottomed pan with hot plate.
  5. Utensils should have tight fitting lids to minimize heat loss.
  6. Cut food into smaller pieces, it cooks faster and evenly.
  7. Use just enough water for cooking. Too much water takes too longer time to boil.
  8. By defrosting foods completely before cooking you reduce cooking time and conserve energy.
  9. You can save energy by keeping your burner pans clean and shiny. This makes them more effective at reflecting heat up to the utensil. Blackened burner pans absorb a lot of heat and reduce burner efficiency.
  10. Always place the cooking pan on the hot plate before switching on the cooker.  And if you need to bake, avoid long preheating of the oven.
  11. Microwave ovens and pressure cookers can save you money as they significantly reduce cooking time.
  12. Baking can be done efficiently when air can circulate freely within the oven. Where possible, stagger pans on the upper and lower racks to improve air flow if you if you are baking in more than one pan.
  13. If you have a self-cleaning oven, it is energy efficient to use this feature only once in a while and just after you have cooked a meal. That way the oven will still be hot and the cleaning feature will require less energy.
  14. It is energy efficient to use the full oven capacity whenever possible. Never overload it however, as this will negate tip #12.
  15. Smaller pans take up less energy to heat up and thus can save energy.
  16. You conserve energy by running your dishwasher only when its fully loaded.
  17. You conserve energy by turning off the dry cycle of your dishwasher. Air-dry items.
  18. Water Kettles are rated between 1000 – 1500 watts;
  19. Boil just enough water for your needs.
